The link between injections for weight loss and vitamin deficiencies

Weight loss jabs such as Wegovy® and Zepbound® have become increasingly popular in recent years, helping many people transform their body and overall health. By mimicking naturally occurring hormones in the gut, these injections regulate appetite and blood sugar levels, which can lead to significant weight loss.
While all medications come with potential side effects, one subtle but important risk is beginning to emerge - potential malnutrition. Our expert nutritionist, Mark Gilbert, explains both the common side effects of weight loss injections, the lesser-known signs that may point to nutrient deficiencies, and how simple changes to your diet can help combat this.
Can weight loss cause vitamin deficiency?
Yes, weight loss can lead to vitamin deficiencies, particularly when people using weight loss jabs are not given clear guidance on how to improve and balance their diet alongside the medication. A reduced appetite often means eating less overall, which can result in missing out on essential nutrients. Over time, this can lead to deficiencies that may affect your day-to-day health if not addressed.
In fact, one study reviewing nearly 500,000 users have found inadequate intakes of essential vitamins and minerals, suggesting that those using GLP-1 medications may be more susceptible to nutrient deficiencies.
GLP-1 side effects
There has been increasing discussion around the side effects of weight loss injections, with many people questioning whether GLP-1s are responsible for symptoms such as fatigue or heartburn. Before exploring nutrient deficiencies, here are some of the most commonly reported side effects:
-
Nausea
-
Fatigue
-
Constipation
-
Diarrhoea
-
Headaches

Vitamin deficiencies – a negative of weight loss jobs?
If you’ve recently started using weight loss injections, your eating habits may have changed significantly. A reduced appetite often leads to a reduced diet, which can mean missing out on key vitamins and minerals needed for a balanced intake.
This can increase the risk of vitamin deficiencies and, if left untreated, symptoms may worsen over time. While your appetite may decrease, your body’s nutritional needs remain the same.
With that in mind, here are some of the most common deficiencies to be aware of and the signs to look out for.
What are the most common vitamin deficiencies for those on weight loss jabs?
Vitamin D
Vitamin D is found in fatty fish, egg yolks and fortified foods such as milk and cheese, as well as from sunlight exposure. Deficiencies are especially common in winter, which is why supplements are often recommended during colder months. Low levels can lead to frequent illness, weaker bones and an increased risk of high blood pressure.
Protein
Protein is found in foods such as chicken, turkey, salmon, tuna, dairy, eggs and chickpeas. Most adults need around 0.75 to 1 gram per kilogram of body weight each day, which can be difficult with a reduced appetite. Low protein intake can lead to fatigue, weakness and muscle loss.
Calcium
Calcium is present in dairy products, leafy greens and certain fish. Adults aged 19 to 50 should aim for around 1,000mg per day. Without enough calcium, symptoms can include muscle cramps, fatigue and tingling in the fingers or toes.
Iron
Meats such as beef, pork, lamb, lentils, spinach, chicken and turkey, along with fish and seafood provide iron. If you’re not getting enough iron, you can experience tiredness, weakness, dizziness, cold hands and feet, brittle nails and even restless leg syndrome.
Magnesium
Magnesium plays an important role in muscle and nerve function. Low levels may lead to fatigue, muscle twitches, irregular heartbeat and even anxiety. Good sources include nuts, seeds, wholegrains and spinach.
Potassium
Also known as hypokalaemia, a potassium deficiency can cause tiredness, weakness and digestive issues. Some excellent sources of potassium include bananas, oranges, potatoes, beans, chicken breast and yogurt.
Fibre
Fibre is essential for digestive health. A lack of wholegrains, fruit, vegetables and nuts can lead to constipation and fatigue. Adults should aim for at least 30 grams per day.
Vitamin A
Vitamin A is found in carrots, dairy products, sweet potatoes and leafy greens. A deficiency can lead to night blindness, dry eyes and slower wound healing.
Vitamin C
Vitamin C comes primarily from fruit and vegetables. Low intake may result in irritability, dry skin, swollen gums and joint pain.
